HDU repeatedly honored with “Best Innovation Labs” award
Founded in 2018, the Heidelberg Digital Unit is today the digital spearhead of the Group in the fields of digital marketing, eCommerce and Digital Innovation & Data Science with a workforce of over 60 employees. The team’s innovations are based on data from the Heidelberg Cloud – a global IIoT network that connects over 13,000 industrial machines with Heidelberg service. The unit derives new smart services and digital business models from this data. In March, the new project “PAT – Performance Advisor Technology” was presented, an AI-based guide to improving the performance of print shops.
The COVID 19 crisis required the agile unit to react quickly to a new task: printing companies around the world felt the impact of the corona measures keenly: while commercial printers were confronted with much lower demand, the demand for packaging and labels experienced a boom. Previous forecasting models for the development of demand in a country no longer work. Therefore, the HDU developed a data model that correlates the infection rates and corona measures in a country with the printing performance. In a weekly update, customers, associations and suppliers in the industry are thus provided with information on the development of production per country. An anonymized sample from the Heidelberg Cloud is used for this purpose. With 5,000 presses, this represents approximately 20% of the global PPV (Print Production Volume) for sheetfed offset.
Heidelberg customers thus have an objective navigator for the situation of the industry in their country and can classify their own productivity at any time via the “Heidelberg Assistant” portal.
